Stocking Poppers! Part 1

It’s that time of year again, when the stores are filled with anxious shoppers and bewildered faces. I do admit that I’m a fan of shopping for friends and family. I enjoy brainstorming gifts that will bring joy to my loved ones and I have no shame in admitting that I like receiving them as well. My family still exchanges stockings, which I love. There’s something about those little “gifties” – as my mom calls them – that are so much fun. It’s like getting a bag filled with fun impulse purchases – a weakness of mine. To help you find what to get the retro girl in your life or if you’re looking to treat yourself, I’ve compiled a list of stocking poppers. Let me know if there are any gifties out there that you’re jonesing for this season.

Soap & Glory A Great Kisser is my kind of lip balm. It feels more like a lip gloss than a balm with moisturizing mango butter and apricot butter to protect your lips from the elements. A Great Kisser comes in two scents – Juicy Peach, which delivers a pretty pink shiny tint and Vanilla Bean, which has more of a warm rose sheen with a bit of sparkle. And who can resist those cute, retro tins?

I like to dress up my nails, but don’t have the patience for nail art so I gravitate towards glittery, glitzy and bold polishes that add impact. Anna Sui’s nail polishes come in a spectrum of 45 shades and finishes spanning from gold glitter to flamingo pink and the perfect red. Plus, look at those bottles. Can you tell I’m a sucker for retro packaging yet? Available at Murale and Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques for $15.

Believe the hype. Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara does it all – lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts and separates in a long-wearing formula that doesn’t dry out. The custom domed brush tip will accentuate lashes you didn’t know you had. Check out the Benefit website for tips and tricks on how best to apply if you’re looking for a doe-eyed look or want to boost your bottom lashes.

Picture Perfect

With wedding season now in full swing, it’s time to start thinking about how to accessorize your cute cocktail dress. You’ve got the peep-toe pumps, the vintage clasp clutch and the feather clip for your hair, but something’s missing… After a winter spent in hibernation your skin is most likely lacklustre. A couple of years ago I was a bridesmaid for a best friend and I brought along Benefit‘s  Hollywood Glo Body Lustre to give my arms, shoulders, back and decollete a slight shimmer. The rest of the bridesmaids liked it so much they all smoothed it on.

Benefit "Take a Picture it Lasts Longer" Body Balm, $32 at Sephora and Shopper's Drug Mart

Now that Hollywood Glo is no longer, there’s another body balm on the block: Bathina “Take a Picture it Lasts Longer” Body Balm. This new version is much like Hollywood Glo in that it’s a silky and glimmering smooth-on balm in the heavenly Maybe Baby signature scent, but unlike my first favourite, Bathina feels lighter on my skin and provides more of a sheer golden-pink finish, which is perfect for my fair complexion. Now you’ll have everything you need for the wedding, just try not to outshine the bride in the pictures.

Pulp Fiction Vixens

On Christian Dior’s Spring 2010 runway, the models looked ripped from the pages of a Hard Case Crime pulp novel. I could just see the titles that these femme fatales would inspire: Blonde With A Bullet, Black Widow, The Bride Said Die and Vegas Vixens. The Lauren Bacall waves, bright red lips and pastel lids in shades of lilac, tangerine and Robin egg blue made for a striking , sweetly seductive look. I found a bevy of beauty products to help you get this look (below). Check in next week for clothing that will help you dress the part of Dior’s film noir vixens.

Who’s That Girl?

In your spare time, you’re most likely to… Hit the Dance Floor. Check

On a first date, you’d most likely wear… A sexy black dress. Check.

In the yearbook you’d be voted… Biggest Bombshell. Hell yes!

While taking a quiz on the Benefit Cosmetics website to determine which of the three new scents from the Crescent Row collection match my personality, I couldn’t help but think, “What Would Marilyn Do?” The result: My Place Or Yours Gina.

Gina is described as a sinfully sexy woman who lives to seduce, tempt and flaunt. And smells absolutely dreamy! The eau de toilette is a woody oriental fragrance with top notes of pink pepper, bergamot and tangerine; middle notes of peony, wild raspberry and while lily; and bottom notes of patchouli, tonka bean and vanilla bean.

The other two fragrances in the line are Laugh With Me LeeLee, a woody floral, and Something About Sophia, an oriental floral. All three fragrances come in vintage flask-inspired bottles that at 30 ml are easy to toss in your handbag. They’re also housed in adorable boxes that look like townhouses decorated to suit each personality. So what’s in Gina’s flat? Pink heels, a boudoir and champagne of course!
