Happy Holidays!

Here’s hoping that Santa brings something special for you under the tree this year! I’ll be back with more retro fashion and beauty finds in the new year. See the lyrics to “Santa Baby” below to get you in the mood. Have a fabulous holiday!

Gil Elvgren's "A Christmas Eve (Waiting For Santa)" 1954

Santa Baby

Buh-bum.. buh-bum…
Santa baby, just slip a sable under the tree, for me
Been an awful good girl
Santa baby so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa baby, a ’54 convertible too, light blue,
I’ll wait up for you dear
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Think of all the fun I’ve missed,
Think of all the fellows that I haven’t kissed
Next year I could be just as good
If you check off my Christmas list

Santa baby, I want a yacht and really that’s not a lot
Been an angel all year
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa honey, one little thing I really need, the deed
To a platinum mine,
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa cutie, and fill my stocking with a duplex and cheques,
Sign your x on the line
Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Come and trim my Christmas tree,
With some decorations bought at Tiffany’s
I really do believe in you,
Let’s see if you believe in me

Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing, a ring,
I don’t mean on the phone,
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry, tonight.

Bake Shop Betty

I’ll find any excuse to bake. Whether it’s cookies, squares, cupcakes… the list goes on. Though I’m a fiend for baked goods, I avoid baking a whole cake unless it’s for a special occasion, meaning my boyfriend and I won’t be the only ones indulging. Now that the holiday season is in full swing I’ve been baking some yummy treats for friends and family. My recent excursion in the kitchen had me looking rather sad in my boyfriend’s too-big, striped brown apron. So I tracked down some cute and kitschy aprons to make whipping-up sugary goodies even more fun.

The Lady's Apron, $34.89 at Anthropologie

Baker's Delight Apron, $34.89 at Anthropologie

Mrs. Claus Apron, $19.96 US at Pier 1

Earth Angel Designs Apron, $38 at Doll Factory By Damzels (1122 Queen St. East, Toronto)

If you’ don’t have much of a sweet tooth (for shame!) or need to feel a little more inspired to get in the baking mood, then lather up with Cake Beauty‘s scrumptious-smelling Bath & Shower Bubbles as part of their Winter Wonderful collection. Available in three scents, Gingerbread Woman (soft ginger and sweet vanilla frosting); Snow Woman (toasted walnuts and vanilla cream); Jacky Frost (raspberries and vanilla crumble), the Bath & Shower Bubbles at a hefty 473 ml will leave your skin super soft and smelling good enough to eat right through winter.

Statement Nails Go Planetary

Statement nails are one of the most attention-grabbing accessories this season and one  manicure that’s come full-circle is the half-moon manicure. This style  first became popular in the 1940s and has most recently been on the Fall 2009 runways at Christian Dior, Ruffian and Thakoon. Burlesque beauty Dita Von Teese has been flashing her lunar nails for years.

Dita Von Teese

Best described as a reverse French manicure, the half-moon manicure is surprisingly easy to replicate on your own as long as you have the right tools. To prep, you need strong nails. I regularly use a nail strengthener because frequent abuse of nail polish and remover makes my nails weak. One of my favourites right now is Sally Hansen’s Quick Care Pen Strength Treatment, which is easily applied with it’s click-and-brush pen. You can have a painted half-moon or not, but if you want the full effect I’d go for the former. Beige and bordeaux were paired at Ruffian; white and navy at Thakoon and cream and purple at Dior.

Christian Dior Fall 2009

I chose white and a deep metallic blue with Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri Fast Dry Nail Colours in Whirlwind White and Blazing Blue. After painting my entire nail white I used Nailene’s Perfect Tips & Toes French Polish Guides adhesive stickers to make a perfect half-moon while painting on the blue polish. And voila! — the perfect half-moon manicure. Although it did take some time and patience, the end result is well worth it — just think of how great it will look while lifting a glass during the holiday party season!

Here is what I used to create a half-moon manicure:

  • Sally Hansen Quick Care Pen Strength Treatment, $9.95 at select drug stores and mass retailers
  • Nailene Perfect Tips & Toes French Polish Guides, $2.99 at Shopper’s Drug Mart
  • Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Fast Dry Nail Colour in Whirlwind White and Blazing Blue, $5.95 at select drug stores and mass retailers

Make A Mise En Scene In Ruffian

I have a confession to make. In the past year, I’ve developed a crush on Ruffian designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais. There’s just something about their youthful yet sophisticated designs that make me all tingly. The Fall 2009 collection of  ladylike bow blouses, pencil skirts and tailored jackets in velvet and wool houndstooth, and point d’esprit stockings was a perfect mix of strong confidence and soft femininity with a Victorian twist.

Right now at Anthropologie stores you can get your own dash of Ruffian dandy with their limited edition collection for the retailer called Mise En Scene By Ruffian. Included in the collection are tailored jackets, ruffled blouses, lacy stockings and even candles and stemware. Below are a few of my favourite pieces.

Brogues Gallery

The at-one-time humble brogue — a traditional low-heeled and narrow men’s leather dress shoe that originated from Ireland and Scotland — is getting its groove back. A great option for women who want a dapper alternative to flats you can wear them with skinny jeans, legging pants and even with a skirt if you’re courageous. With so many options in stores now — two-tone oxford, suede, velvet, perforated, patent — it’s tough to pick just one style that says, “I’m fine and dandy.”

Hello! My Name Is Melissa

While on a recent vacation to Portugal’s Azores islands, I purchased a pair of Melissa Vinyl T-strap wedges in grape purple – and I’m hooked. The Brazilian company is the original purveyour of the jelly shoe and for 28 years has been making fun, sexy, cute, comfortable and candy-scented shoes that are available all over the world.

I know that you’re probably hesitant to give plastic shoes a try because of the dreaded blisters that your jelly shoes gave you when you were a kid, even though you never took them off damn it. But Melissa shoes are made with their patented MEFLEX™ material that molds to the shape of your feet so they’re always the perfect fit! Further proof that these are grown-up jelly shoes, Melissa has collaborated in the past with designers and artists such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Karim Rashid and Alexandre Herchcovitch. The latest ooh- and awe-inspiring partnership is with the grand dame of fashion herself, Vivienne Westwood. Melissa shoes are available in Toronto at Imelda, Balisi, Little Burgundy, Due West/Next Door and Dew.

Here are some of my favourites from the Fall 2009 collection:

Welcome To The Jungle

Lately it’s been a bit of a zoo out there on jewelery counters with bracelets, rings and necklaces adorned with sparkly creatures from the animal kingdom. Whether they’re coming from the sky, the sea or the jungle, there are all sorts of slithery and scaly reptiles or colourful and cuddly creatures to choose from. And hey, it’s a lot more easier than having an actual pet.
