Miss American Pie

This season, one of my favourite collections is Michael Kors‘ patriotic nod to all things Americana. The crisp, chic and oh-so red, white & blue collection features polka-dot bikinis, big nautical stripes and ’50s-style full skirts and gingham dresses. Mod Cloth.com currently has a wide selection of retro one- and two-pieces that you’ll want to wear both in and out of the water.

The make-up on the runway was also sweet as pie. The models wore rich red lips — a welcome change during the summer days of numerous soft pink lip glosses — and sun-kissed cheeks. I would suggest Rimmel‘s Sunshimmer Maxi Bronzer for a healthy looking sun-kissed glow. The gold shimmer in the powder leaves a touch of sparkle. Rimmel’s Moisture Renew Lipstick in “Diva Red” looks just like the cherry shade on Michael Kors’ runway. It’s a great lipstick for warm temps as it conditions and has a shiny, not matte, finish. Happy picnicking!

Toronto Burlesque Festival

Girls, get your garters ready! The Toronto Burlesque Festival kicks off on Thursday, July 23 and is filled with four days of shimmying, shaking and more ways of seductive undressing than you can imagine. The “Tassels Without Borders”-themed festival promises burlesque performers from Toronto, including the Skin Tight Outta Sight troupe, and around the world.

What’s really got my knickers in a knot, and I’m talking in a good way, is this year’s first Burlesque University, which is a line-up of workshops to learn from the pros on how to shimmy, tease, fan dance and even how to pose for your own pin-up girl photo shoot. The festival will also feature a burlesque retrospective art show, photography and costume exhibit, bra auction and a marketplace with burlesque-themed goodies.

For additional info, including schedules and ticket prices go to the Toronto Burlesque Festival website.

And here’s my pick for the perfect sailor-inspired dress to wear during the festivities. This gorgeous number is available at Hells Belles on Queen Street West and was once worn by Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf while en route to Paris.

C’mon Get Happy

Nivea’s new line of Happy Time bath products promises to indulge your senses, inspire your mind and make for a “true happy time.” The collection includes the Shower Cream and Cream Beauty Bar that contain softening bamboo milk, which is rumoured to have aphrodisiac powers, and a fragrance that combines energizing orange and grapefruit for a pick-me-up.

A kick to your senses that also ups your libido? If only Betty Draper of Mad Men had used Nivea’s Happy Time collection to combat her surburban housewife ennui it would have made for a much more thrilling marriage. Look for Happy Time Body Lotion to come out next month.

Drop-Dead Red

Coco Rocha may have gotten rid of her red locks already, but this summer red is H-O-T! Right now I’m lusting over Evan Rachel Wood’s fire-engine red hair. If you’re thinking of going fiery this season, there’s no reason not to turn to from-the-kit colour. Even Dita Von Teese recently tweeted about dying her hair blue-black from the box.

If you want to know how to choose the right shade of red, then follow these tips from Clairol Consulting Colourist Christopher Martin.

  • If you have fair skin, choose a cooler tone like a medium reddish blonde.
  • Medium skin tones should go with a medium red shade like medium auburn.
  • Olive-skinned redheads should avoid bright reds and use a dark auburn.

Floral Picking At Forever 21

Lately  both sweet and sexy floral dresses are sprouting up everywhere, and whether it’s big and bold blooms in bright colours or more demure liberty floral prints it’s hard not to take notice. Forever 21 currently has a crop of dresses that have caught my attention and recent obsession with getting my hands on anything flowery. There are some great choices if you’re looking for a sweetly seductive dress for a wedding, backyard BBQ or while sipping mai tais on the patio of your favourite tiki bar. I’ll take one of each.

It’s that time of year again — with the NXNE music festival comes lots of bands and BBQs! I’ll be multi-tasking on Saturday afternoon at the annual Six Shooter Records & Doll Factory By Damzels’ NXNE Back Lot BBQ. It’s free to attend and only the booze will set you back. On stage performing will be Royal Wood, Luke Doucet, Justin Rutledge and The Beauties, among other toe-tapping performers.

In addition to the live music, Doll Factory has new in-stock Damzels In This Dress gingham rockabilly dresses, Sailor Jerry men’s shirts and Stop Staring! frocks. My boyfriend is going to have to hold me back, but I’ll fight him off.

Soap & Glory Gets Me Hot & Lathered

I have to hand it to Soap & Glory for catching my attention on the crowded drug store shelf. The collection of bath and beauty products from Canadian Marcia Kilgore, who launched the uber-successful Bliss Spa chain, features cheeky names and retro-styled packaging. The cut & paste collages with black & white photos of women who look like they were ripped from the pages of my grandmother’s stacks of ’60s Family Circle magazines are what first drew me in. But the pink bottles with pulp fiction-style images weren’t the only thing that I found to be gloriously sudsy.

With the Clean On Me Creamy Clarifying Shower Gel a little goes a long way. Only a small dollop is needed to work up a velvety lather and the built-in body lotion leaves my skin feeling moisturized and with a slight glisten. After showering, apply The Righteous Butter Body Lotion. It’s creamy formula has smoothing fruit acids, Shea butter and Aloe Vera. What I really enjoy most is Soap & Glory’s signature scent – a mix of bergamot, peach, strawberry, jasmine, mandarin and musk – that I find to be both elegant and comforting reminding me of the trusted and fanciful creams and lotions that used to crowd my grandmother’s dresser.
