Take A Colourful Trip To Alice’s Wonderland

When I was a young girl I watched my VHS tape of Disney’s Alice In Wonderland religiously while acting out the part of Alice – movements, expressions, words and all – along to the film. My love of Alice and her magical adventures still lives on and with the film release this March of Tim Burton’s adaptation of the beloved Lewis Carroll story the warm fuzzy spot in my heart has been rekindled.

There’s no doubt that the merchandising surrounding the film will be overwhelming and tap into that cherished nostalgia shared by me and so many others. So I was really excited to learn that Urban Decay, one of my favourite cosmetics brands, has come out with the limited edition Alice In Wonderland Inspired Book Of Shadows. Just like a pop-up book, the palette opens to reveal Alice on her journey through the mushroom forest. The palette contains 16 best-selling shades with new names inspired by the film, such as White Rabbit, Curiouser, Jabberwocky and Midnight Tea Party. Also included are two travel-size 24/7 Eye Pencils and an Eyeshadow Primer Potion.

Also getting in on the phantasmical action is OPI with its four limited-edition nail lacquers inspired by Burton’s film. My favourites are Absolutely Alice; a glittery blue shade similar to Alice’s dress and Mad As A Hatter; a purple multi-glitter. Be sure to pick-up the OPI Top Coat as the glitter polishes do chip easily. Enjoy the trip!

Dior’s Boudoir Beauties

In last week’s ‘Cause She’s A Lady post on how to get the look of Christian Dior’s party-on-the-top, business-on-the-bottom (or vice versa) ensembles from the Fall 2009 Couture collection, I promised to bring you the makeup finds on how to create the beauty looks. There were really two different looks in this collection. The first was a strong, classic retro beauty look with silver eyes, sharp black winged eyeliner and bright red lips.

Christian Dior Fall 2009 Couture

How to get this look:

  1. Urban Decay Cream Shadow in Moonshine, $22 at Sephora
  2. Estee Lauder Gel Eyeliner in Black, $23 at select The Bay counters across Canada for a limited time
  3. Lancome L’Absolu Rouge Lipstick in Absolute Rouge as part of the Gold Fascination Collection, $35 at The Bay counters starting January 1

The second was a softer, though no less stronger,  sugary look with with lilac on the eyes, black winged eyeliner and pale pink or fuchsia lips. Both of these are perfect looks for your holiday parties, depending on whether you want to go more tough vixen or bad-girl-next door.

A Little Mermaid

Maybe it’s the fact that I’m an Aquarius, but when I saw photos of go-to glamour gal Katy Perry performing at the Vienna Life Ball in a starfish and glitter encrusted dress with strategically-placed seashells, I couldn’t help but feel an urge for the life aquatic.

To channel your inner Ariel, Too Faced‘s Mermaid’s Treasure Beauty Collection inspired by the sea comes with a treasure trove of goodies in a metallic aqua blue makeup bag with mermaid decals. In the bag, you get the Sun Bunny Bronzer, Lip Bronzer in Sun Bunny, Mini Lash Injection in black and a Flatbuki Brush for only $40.50 at Sephora.

If you’re looking for something a little more intense then pick up Urban Decay‘s new Liquid Liner and Eyeshadow both in Minx (a rich metallic teal) and Ecstasy (a deep metallic violet).

And don’t forget your hair. To get soft and sculpted glamorous waves, use Sunsilk’s Waves Of Envy Gel & Cream Twist. I like the combination of the two formulas for a nice soft hold. No one wants a piecey mess of hair, no matter how much it makes you look like Daryl Hannah in Mermaid.
